Lot Title: 1818 PCGS MS-62
Lot Number: 769
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 10 graded MS-62, 6 higher at PCGS. Production of the "capped bust to left" half-eagle resumed in 1818 after a three year hiatus, but emissions would remain limited until the peak year of 1820. Moderate lemon-gold coloration infuses the coin with the "proper" appearance in terms of hue, with faints remnants of richer carrot gold visible within some isolated, protected areas. It is instantly easy to appreciate the fact that neither side shows excessive evidence of adjustment marks, although as expected, some trivial glancing hairlines scatter throughout - incidental to light handling in the past. The adjustment marks that are present lightly pass over the ear area and are mostly eradicated by the strike. CATALOGER'S NOTE: Incredibly for a coin of this caliber, PCGS has allowed a hair to become encapsulated along with the coin, dangling from the upper rim of the reverse.
