Lot Title: 1857-S PCGS MS-62
Lot Number: 444
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 5 graded MS-62, 2 higher at PCGS (and both grade only MS-63). An intriguing blush of mulberry-grey looms over Liberty's left (observed) shoulder, and is offset by a similar, smaller patch of purplish iridescence within the lower right quadrant. Were the luster just a touch more vibrant, one might well make a case for upgrade to the Choice level, and for sure, the marvelous sharpness adds immediate appeal to the quality. Looking at the PCGS population report even in lower grades than MS-62 finds just one more at MS-61, meaning the entire mint-state population for 1857-S half-dollar could fit in the palm of one's hand. How is that for grade-rarity?
