Lot Title: 1854 NGC PR-66 RB
Lot Number: 168
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 1 graded PF-66 RB, zero higher at NGC, making this a contender for acclaim as the finest known proof 1854 large-cent. Indeed, an EAC census probably would agree with that assessment, although at least a single known 1854 proof large-cent shows so-called "full red luster" and might have legitimate claims on the top spot in a subjective contest. Moss-grey iridescence bears over the upper right quadrant of this red-brown specimen, propagating well into the fields, where it is met by the distinctive pale copper-red, blending significantly with ashy overtones throughout. Not one single contact point can be discerned even under the most careful inspection, although a single exceedingly small, segmented hairline-scratch floating randomly in the right field might serve as a provenance marker. The fields shows surprisingly nice reflectivity in spite of the present patina, and attesting to the superb details throughout, evidence of a powerful strike includes knifelike rims on both sides.
