Lot Title: 1860-S PCGS AU-58
Lot Number: 948
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 7000. 8 graded AU-58, 4 higher at PCGS. To say that this is a rare coin in mint-state is an understatement, as even a quick glance at the PCGS population report confirms that it is basically not available above the present AU-58 assessment. Indeed, mint-state examples represent one of the two or three most difficult key dates in the entire series (discounting the unique 1870-S). Given these facts, the astute collector might well seek out a trivially worn example like this that offers basically full mint-state eye-appeal at a fraction of the cost. Butterscotch-gold patina holds off any concerns about cleaning, and the fields appear offer a nice blend between modest reflectivity and frosty luster. Minor incompleteness of strike attests to branch-mint production.
