Lot Title: 1879 Trade PCGS PR-66
Lot Number: 710
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 1541. 20 graded PF-66, 5 higher at PCGS. Aesthetic presentation falls nowhere short of amazing for the invigorating color that looms over the entire surface. Beginning in 1879, only proof examples of the Trade dollar design were struck, all for collectors, and with such brief use of the dies, most are as well struck as this absurdly sharp example. The key to observing this particular very-gem example is to get it tilted just properly under a light, which will then encourage glorious colors to shine right off the surface. Pleasing bands of chartreuse-jade and cobalt-gold suddenly merge with the shimmering crimson-grey that occupies most of the central portion of each side. This toning pattern plays out for both sides, and the recesses of each major motif protects additional royal-blue iridescence within.
