Lot Title: 1836 Reeded Edge ICG AU details/cleaned
Lot Number: 613
Description: Mintage: 1200 according to many popular references, although the suspected mintage could be at least twice that estimate. November 8, 1836 saw the advent of the Thonnelier steam-powered press at the U.S. mint for production of circulating coinage (the press had been employed previously to strike commemorative medalets), thus utterly revolutionizing American coinage from that day forward. In any state of preservation, the 1836 reeded-edge half-dollar has remained a popular inaugural type coin, as well as a famed representation of the then-new technology. ICG suggests that this example has been cleaned, and the disclaimer seems apt, given glossy granularity seen throughout each side. Still, despite the somewhat dull lead-grey patina, this is not an unattractive coin, and it appears some effort was made to create artificial patina that fairly mimics natural color.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
