Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 83,000, Eliasberg pedigree indicated on the NGC slab. 1872-S is a recognized condition rarity within the Seated Liberty series, although even circulated examples are very difficult to come by. The scarcity can be partially explained by the limited mintage that was produced off of a single pair of working dies. As such, this crisply defined example can be said to have fallen off of middle-state dies, since a die clash has produced a distinctive line across the motto on the reverse. The beige-white surface endures only minimal diminishing of original brilliance, although the Richmond example (an outrageous MS-66 example in similar die-state) is even more brilliant. Trivial splashes of pale gold scatter into the fields providing modest counterpoint against the aforementioned patina.
