Lot Title: 1802 PCGS AU-53
Lot Number: 399
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. JR-4 (R.4) can generally be attributed by ascertaining the sizable gap between "Y" in LIBERTY and the eight star. Slate-grey patina layers carefully over underlying magenta-orange luster, with some reflectivity beaming from the fields. As usual, the central area of Liberty's portrait sees incomplete definition, especially around the ear, but the stars all provide decent, tantalizing sharpness. Further attesting to the strike deficiency nearly always seen for 1802, the horizontal shield lines are quite softly delineated. A delicate scratch is attached to the bottom point of the fifth star and represents the only contact mark that would be noticed on either side. Glinting mint luster pulls together all the positive aspects of the very good eye-appeal.
