Lot Title: 1866 J-520 PCGS PR-60
Lot Number: 380
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Judd-520, Pollock-547 was given a perfectly understandable grade of PF-60 by PCGS in this case, no doubt in part to the fact that it was struck in lead. Plumbum does not make for a particularly attractive metal when striking coins, but this is of minimal importance for a coin of this extreme rarity considering it is the only 5-cent pattern known to have been struck in that peculiar metal. The reverse shows what appears to be a bisecting die-crack of outrageous size, and one wonders whether the fragile die necessitated the exotic use of the very soft metal.
