Lot Title: 1856 Flying Eagle NGC PR-62 CACCAC
Lot Number: 167
Description: Debate continues to rage over when to call an 1856 a "proof" versus an example intended for circulation, this example selected for "PF-62" assessment by NGC; the grading services always seem to settle upon proof designation today. Hands-down, the entire coin on both sides has been intricately struck, showing prominent definition within every single feather, as well as completely delineated veins in the leaves of the wreath. That being said, rims do not appear to be squared off to any particular degree of sharpness, and one cannot say the details are brought up in ultimate relief - this has all the appearance of a pleasing circulation strike. Perfect color dominates the coin, suggesting an exceptional level of vintage preservation, and careful examination of the field beneath the eagle reveals delicate planchet flaws that further dispute the "proof" designation. Neither side has any contact to report, and the "62" numeric level probably was determined by delicate, hidden friction in the obverse upper field.
