Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1838 N-1, AU
Lot Number: 840
Description: Newcomb-1, struck off of earlier dies for which the cud exists beneath the first star, but the rest of the rim has not crumbled yet, as it would in later die-states. Cataloger's COMMERCIAL grade: [AU-58], reflecting an essentially uncirculated reverse, but flowline luster within the central obverse fields fades away in the face of scrutiny. The reverse offers typical brown hue, but given the provenance of this specific cent, the cataloger is satisfied that they scrumptious bluish obverse overtones are natural and not induced by accelerated means (professional third-party grading may well not agree).

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, CACG, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
