Description: In 1878, the Carson City Mint shifted to production of the new Morgan dollar. To the present day collector's chagrin, half dollars were ignored to a large degree. Where Mint employees produced over a million CC half dollars in 1875, 1876, and 1877, now they struck only 62,000 pieces. A bona fide rarity in any mint state grade, the 1878-CC half is also simply difficult to acquire even in the presnt "surfaces smoothed" designation. (CE)
