Lot Title: 1907 High Relief-Flat Rim PCGS MS-64
Lot Number: 497
Description: 1907 Saint-Gaudens $20 High Relief, Flat Edge, MS64 PCGS. This lot tells the story of a determined president, a dying artist, and the Renaissance of American coinage design. Shortly after President Theodore Roosevelt won his only Presidential campaign as the lead candidate in 1904, he commissioned talented artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create his inaugural medal. This partnership would soon progress to new designs for America’s gold $10 and $20 coins, with the latter thought as many as the pinnacle of American coinage artistry. Liberty radiates on the obverse, representing an America striding into the future boldly. This message in metal is paired with a reverse boasting a beautifully rendered eagle soaring above the glowing rays of a rising sun. The designs were meant to be struck in High Relief, which necessitated modifications in the production process to alleviate undesired metal flow. Roger Burdette's 2006 Renaissance of American Coinage, 1905-1908, details the saga toward the higher, greater artistic style, while engaging in practical mechanical methods. Later issues were not struck in High Relief, and those coins that were made in this manner are rarer and more desirable than their standard issue counterparts. About one in six examples feature the Flat Edge (also called Flat Rim). This coin type is the closest thing America has ever issued to rival the designs of the ancient Greek coin sculptors. And this exact specimen – exhibiting the satiny luster typical for the type – is a time capsule to the early 20th-century U.S. Mint floor, as enthralling as the day it was made 119 years ago. (JS)
