Lot Title: 1803 Small Stars Reverse PCGS MS-61
Lot Number: 447
Description: BD-3 "small stars reverse", R.4. Because a single obverse die paired up with six reverse dies to strike all 1803 gold eagles, the clash marks seen as delicate, slanted lines across the portrait are exactly as predicted by state c/d for the die-marriage. That said, the reverse die was reused from 1802 and features even bolder clash marks from the previous year's usage, most visible as what look like flame surrounding the eagle's head. Faint luster is an expected characteristic of an early eagle in MS-61, the surface shrouded within consistent lemon-gold throughout. A number of nearly microscopic carbon flecks splash outward toward the obverse right, joined by the sole noticeable bagmark in front of Liberty's lips. Completing inspection of the surface finds subtle pinscratches, extended left from the bottom of the shield but no other anomalies.
