Description: (c. 1853) California Gold Quarter Dollar. Round Liberty design, Breen-Gillio 204B. A genuine pioneer fractional gold piece struck by private jewelers during the Gold Rush to ease a shortage of small change, hence the unique undated nature of the specie. A magnified inspection reveals curiously toned and largely original surfaces despite the presence of some adhesive or residual substance. (CE)
