Description: Russia, Nicholas I (1825-1855), silver Borodino Commemorative Rouble, 1839, Battle of Borodino, 20.35g (Bit. 895; KM C170). Uncirculated. Another Napoleonic-themed commemorative ruble from 19th-century Russia, this is among the most popular of all coins of Nicholas I. The Battle of Borodino coin depicts the monument to the battle, which on Sept. 7, 1812, pitted the Grande Armée against the Imperial Russian Army. It was the bloodiest single day in the Napoleonic Wars, and Russia suffered an estimated 45,000 casualties. Napoleon’s indecisiveness about deploying the Imperial Guard, however, allowed Russia to retreat into friendly territory and regroup to stay in the fight. The coin is very scarce with most of the original mintage having been melted. While it’s generally available and more affordable at lower grades, there are only five in this same grade, and only one higher. There’s some serious flash underneath those deep, dark chocolate surfaces – give the coin a spin and become mesmerized by the slightest hint of a bluish twinkle. This will be the pinnacle of your collection of Russian silver commemoratives. (JS)
