Description: Russia built a series of monuments to its successes against Napoleon, and later chose to honor these objects by featuring them on commemorative rubles. The 1834 1-ruble (Bit-894) issued under Nicholas I shows the Alexander Column in the center of Palace Square in St. Petersburg. The massive 155-foot monument was built between 1830 and 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon. It features an 83-foot red granite monolith weighing 600 tons, topped with an angel holding a cross. Only 15,000 examples of this coin were issued, and how many survived in this condition and with this much subtle color? (JS)
