Description: Russia’s Czar Nicholas II performs double duty on this 1828 bronze medal issued to mark Russia’s declaration of war against Turkey. The king, and one of his glorious sideburns, graces the absolutely mellow chocolate obverse that shimmers in a rotated light. He also appears on the reverse, as a crusading knight presented with a sword by the personification of Russia. One does not have to be a scholar of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829 to appreciate the design rich with symbolism. (JS)
