Description: The 1715 Treasure Fleet was an infamous party of Spanish galleons that attempted to return from the New World to Spain in July, 1715. Seven days after departing from Havana, Cuba, 11 of the 12 ships from this fleet were lost in a hurricane near present day Vero Beach, Florida. Roughly 1,000 sailors were lost and hoards of coinage were sunk. This 1714 die type 2 escudo was miraculously recovered from the wreckage, and was submerged for hundreds of years for before entering the Arthur McKee collection, a man notable for his contributions to unearthing and salvaging the 1733 Spanish fleet hoard among other wreckages. He is sometimes known as "The Father of Modern Treasure Hunting" and formerly owned the example presented here. This humbly offered specimen is certified MS-61, with a special NGC galleon label and shipwreck certification. The lot, moreover, comes with the original certificate of authenticity of ownership transfer when it left the McKee collection in 2007. (CE)
