Description: Rich in symbolism, this undated (1800) medallic scudo hails from the Cisalpine Republic, a short-lived republic allied with France. Napoleon reconfigured the political landscape in Northern Italy with this client state, lasting from 1797 to 1802. This PCGS -graded AU58 medal offers burnt mahogany surfaces, but close inspection reveals a fascinating design. An allegorical figure representing the Republic pays tribute to France, which is seated. A stork stands at her left feet, and a cornucopia rests on the other side. This was issued to celebrate the Convention of Alessandria, which followed the French Army’s victory in the Battle of Marengo. (JS)
