Lot Title: Great Britain - (1797) half dollar Madrid Spain countermark - PCGS AU-50
Lot Number: 165
Description: It takes money to make money, the saying goes. That’s what Great Britain did from 1804 to 1811 when it overstruck Spanish Colonial silver coins to redenominate them. This was necessary to address a coin shortage due to the Napoleonic Wars. This example displays a strong oval countermark on a charcoal gray host coin, the less commonly encountered 4 reale size. Estimate: $1,350-$1,450
Lot Status: This lot is not yet open for bidding.

Please Note: An 18% Buyers' Premium is added to the hammer price of all lots in this sale.
