Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1818 B-8, terminal dies, AU
Lot Number: 819
Description: The Opa Collection. Browning-8, die state IV, R.3. In the earliest stage, B-8 was used to strike the first proof emissions for the large-sized capped-bust type, of which two are known today. That being said, this cataloger's grade [AU-50] example was clearly struck long after any specimens were produced, as can be inferred by heavily clashed dies. Clashing was so strong that inverse-relief arrows point out of the top of Liberty's head -- characteristic of die-state IV, the terminal stage. Also notable is the 20 degree die rotation and the telltale brief die crack through the leaf left of "25 C." On top of all of this technical intrigue, this happens to be a stunning, lustrous example that features vivid wintergreen and cobalt hues around a proportional area of magenta and violet at the centers. For accuracy, a delicate pinscratch traces the top of the eagle's right (observed) wing, resulting in a modestly lowered numeric grade ESTIMATE.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, CACG, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
