Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1884-S PCGS AU-58
Lot Number: 657
Description: An infamous condition rarity within the series, the certified population at AU-58 seems absurdly inflated, probably due to resubmission of like AU-58 coins to attempt a full UNC grade, which instantly multiplies the value of any 1884-S. As a result, many superior examples at the grade get swamped by the plethora of run-of-the-mill population -- which is eminently not where this example ends up. On the contrary, this Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award designee truly sparkles with virtually full mint luster but can honestly be described as showing finger friction only. And what substantially elevates its appeal is the full complement of album color encircling the obverse with cinnamon-gold, orange and ocean-blue hues. The reverse features modest toast-gold on the rim.
