Lot Title: 1881-S PCGS MS-63
Lot Number: 447
Description: Cactus Saint-Moon Collection. 25 graded MS-63, 10 higher at PCGS. San Francisco gold tended to circulate extensively through the 1880s, explaining why so few survive today in choice or better grade. As the population report indicates, it is a rare coin at the choice grade level and very rare graded any higher. Here is a remarkably attractive example, endowed with deep, delightful antique golden hue on both sides, energized by dazzling cartwheel effects. Closer examination discovers pinpoint-sharp details throughout both sides. The reverse appears to grade slightly higher than the obverse, suggesting say MS-62/MS-62+, although more than a few curious marks scrape over Liberty's cheek. A premier coin in today's auction, especially for aficionados of the double-eagle series.
