Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1872 RPD (not mentioned) NGC MS-65 RD
Lot Number: 840
Description: 5 graded MS-65 RD, 1 higher at NGC. Snow-5a (we believe), bold N reverse, repunched 72 in date. This coin should hardly exist since Richard Snow, the foremost authority, has stated that 1872 is the single most difficult Indian cent to find with full mint red color in gem condition. Due to many being melted in contemporary times, the relatively large mintage of 4-million is misleading -- anyone who has ever assembled a high grade set of Indian cents know that 1872 is one of the stoppers. Surprisingly intense red luster spins around the obverse of this example and mellows only at isolated areas of high relief, while the reverse sees just slight greying on additional highpoint details.
