Lot #: Go
Lot Title: Mexico - 1812-CA RP Chihuahua T and Pomegranate Countermark 8 Reales- PCGS VF-25
Lot Number: 269
Description: M#123, Chihuahua mint. How PCGS is able to come up with such an exacting grade for a crudely cast 8-reales is difficult to ascertain, but suffice it to say the surface shows evidence of a fair amount of circulation. Dies were not available in Chihuahua circa 1810-1813 during the Mexican War of Independence, forcing the mint to resort to casting 8-reales from molds which were themselves produced from struck coins. Because of their similarity to cast counterfeits, each had to be officially counterstamped to ensure acceptance in commerce.
