Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1861 $10 Fr# 6 - PMG F-15/surface repairs
Lot Number: 23
Description: Among the instruments available to the Federal government to raise capital during the Civil War, issuance of "Demand Notes" (nicknamed "greenbacks" for the green design on the back) was ono of the most prevalent, prior to introduction of the legal tender series. They represent the first central government-sponsored paper currency to reach a nationwide level of circulation. Remarkably, these are still considered legally redeemable at face value by the U.S. government although with so few in existence off the issued $5, $10 and $20 denominations, one hopes the collector value such items is obvious. PMG denotes "surface repairs" in reference to the back of this worn example but that does not preclude inclusion in the pantheon of Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award winners.
