Lot Title: Two Proprietary proof
Lot Number:
Description: Each of these notes represents the finest security and engraving elements of the two foremost competing banknote printing firms of their time: National Banknote Company and American Banknote Company. Additionally, issued notes from these institutions are unheard of. In fact, the antebellum Mercantile Bank (PMG GemCU-65 EPQ) apparently never got beyond the planning stages and does not appear in period documentation or literature. It appears that this note may have been an internal test note printed by ABNCo from the original plates to check for inking quality and other parameters. Similarly, these Hermitage Bank (PMG GemCU-66 EPQ) was partially organized and had notes printed for issue but never opened for business, probably due to the financial uncertainties connected with the imminent start of the Civil War.
In any event, these are a sight to behold—two notes destined to elevate the finest cabinet.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
