Lot Title: $500 Obsolete - 1839-41 Republic of Texas PMG VF-35/cancelled/severed and reattached
Lot Number:
Description: A classic numismatic rarity, the $500 is the key note from the Republic of Texas series and the highest denomination issued by the fledgling nation.
Fortunately, the lengthy history of this particular note is fairly traceable. “Williams” was paid at the Republic of Texas embassy in New Orleans, the only location that canceled in this manner. The written Cancelled manuscript was applied across the face and then the person who was Paid, Williams, was written on the back in two places as well as the serial number twice, 707. The note was then cut in half and the two pieces were sent back to Texas separately. Half was sent by Sailing Ship either to Galveston (typically) or Velasco and then from there by wagon or horseback. The other half was sent across the Mississippi River and then transported by wagon or another form of overland delivery. When the two parts reached Austin, Texas they were accounted for and put back together. The “Funded and Cancelled” rubber stamp was applied at the right and the Cut-Out Cancelation was applied as well, which is seen at left. In this case, the cuts were complete and the triangle fell out.
$500's are not typically cancelled in this manner; most notes thus cancelled have been the Houston Government notes. The $500's bear the CoC and Funded stamp(s) but are seldom seen severed and reattached. This is an exceptional presentation piece with the additional history of passing through New Orleans.
Overall, the appearance is much nicer than the assigned grade suggests and the full frame makes this note “choice,” along with the added cachet of a distinguished Texas pedigree from a notable Texas historian.
