Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1842 PCGS XF-40
Lot Number: 324
Description: Mintage: 2823. 10 graded XF-40, 26 higher at PCGS. Charlotte and Dahlonega have earned their reputations for rare emissions, but Philadelphia struck even fewer quarter-eagles in 1842, yet its specimens are actually valued lower than those of either southern mint. Here is an utterly delightful example sporting faintly mustard patina with greyish accents. Softness seen throughout derives from honest wear only, the only contact being a small nick in the reverse right field. Estimates suggest less than 60 examples of 1842 surviving through today.
