Lot Title: 1878-S NGC VG-8
Lot Number: 768
Description: Mintage of 12,000 pieces should have provided for a decent level of availability as compared to even lower emissions from Philadelphia in subsequent years, but every Seated Liberty half-dollar specialist recognizes the rarity of 1878-S. Estimates suggest that only fifty or so pieces exist. Even though LIBERTY cannot be read on the shield, that is no longer how these are graded, as the balance of details suggest the VG-10 level of sharpness. That said, some detriments including ancient, toned-in circulation scratches net the grade to VG-8 per NGC. Authenticity is more of an issue as these have been faked by adding an "S" to a much more common 1878-S.

The cataloger notes very dry surfaces with curiously hazy patina in the lower lying areas, while higher relief areas display some smoothness from wear. A trivial, linear abrasions flings far to either side of the obverse while an aforementioned disturbance can be found around the left side of the scroll. A coin guaranteed to be of strong interest to collectors of the series, for which 1878-S represents one of THE stoppers, and this an all-the-more important example that we believe to be new to the market.
