Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1840 (O) Without O Mintmark Reverse of 1838 WB-101 XF/cleaned
Lot Number: 735
Description: Wiley-Bugert-101. The variety is famous for pairing a normal 1840 obverse with a leftover 1839-O reverse die, used when New Orleans had its mintmark on the obverse rather than on the reverse. As a consequence, the 1840(O) has no mintmark to indicate the mint of origin. Die cracks through "M" and "A" in MERICA serve to confirm attribution of the only 1840 half-dollar with an 1838 type reverse. The surface has been thoroughly cleaned so as to create a nearly brilliant coin in direct opposition to XF details. The reverse displays no mentionable incursions otherwise, but a delicate pinscratch descends into the obverse right field while a couple of other relatively minor circulation marks accompany.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
