Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1887 NGC MS-66 Star
Lot Number: 644
Description: N.P. Consignment. Of the 135,000 silver dollars that Ted Binion stuck into the ground of the arid Nevada desert, most are admittedly... well, not attractive. Not so this astonishing very-gem example as the coin not only garners an MS-66 "star" grade from NGC, but it also offers a jaw-dropping obverse that shimmers with wintergreen, ruby-orange, yolk-gold and magenta pink hues. The effect is quite astonishing when viewed in person as a good lamp brings out three-dimensional effects not usually seen for such pieces. As a date, 1887 will clearly never reach key status, but when a coin has the dual appeal of a famous named hoard plus star-quality eye-appeal, it only follows that the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award applies as well.
