Lot #: Go
Lot Title: Roman Empire - AD 14-37 denarius Tiberius, Lugdunum, "Tribute Penny", NGC F/4/4
Lot Number: 162
Description: Arturio James Collection. OBV: laureate head of Tiberius facing right. REV: PONTIF MAXIM around Livia (as Pax) seated on chair facing right, scepter and olive branch. Wonderfully smooth and free from defects as the modestly darker pewter-grey surface shows no distractions. In a passage in the King James version of the bible, Jesus is asked whether it is lawful to give tribute to Caesar, to which he replies "bring me a penny that I may see it". Such is the impetus for the notoriety of this coin when Jesus answers "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar". Always extremely desirable and a pleasing, honestly circulated example of the type.
