Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1837 No Stars Small Date (incorrectly labeled as Large Date) NGC MS-66
Lot Number: 827
Description: Valentine 6A "small date", blundered by NGC with "LG DATE" listed on the slab insert. "1" in the date has a short, flat top and "7" is visibly smaller than the other numerals for this logotype. This is more a blunder than a mere error because small date examples in high grade are much rarer than their large date counterparts, even if price guides have failed (so far) to catch up to this fact. Between them, PCGS and NGC have graded approximately 30 small date pieces at MS-66 or higher while about 140 large date examples exist in the same grades. (We say "approximately" since other pieces have been seen incorrectly attributed.)

Stepping aside from controversy, this is a fabulous example for the grade, showing pinpoint strike quality despite heavily clashed and lapped dies. Absolutely delightful electric cobalt, indigo-green, and russet-orange shades are especially conspicuous along the obverse lower left and encircling almost the entire reverse.
