Lot Title: 1937-D 3 Legged PCGS MS-65+ CACCAC
Lot Number: 963
Description: 16 graded MS-65+, 33 higher at PCGS. Discovery of the famous variety was published in 1937-8 in Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, shortly after the coins were errantly struck off of an overpolished reverse die, and one might expect that an early alert such as that would have caused many to be saved in mint-state. Nevertheless, very few examples exceed the gem grade level at either PCGS or NGC, making any such properly graded gem a true cornerstone of an elite collection. The cataloger suggests this to be a middle strike as the surface took on satiny luster from the dies, rather than the more subdued appearance seen for many three-legged nickels. The die defects arcing down from the bison's midsection are as plain as day and the coin was clearly well struck overall. Still, isolated, delicate orange peel texture shows at portions of the obverse, perfectly complemented with overall orange patina that exposes cobalt-rose and burgundy highlights om the cheek and brow. Virtually no marks show anywhere on the surface, but the grade might be slightly affected by a few exceptionally tiny carbon dots.
