Lot Title: 1850 $5 Mormon PCGS XF-40
Lot Number: 239
Description: T M Consignment. Kagin-5, R.5+. The 1850 bears motifs similar to the 1849 issue except that on the obverse, a halo (or "crown") now fills space between the tri-pointed hat and the eye, and the reverse has modifications as well. All of these devices have been brought up nicely for this example but light wear has eroded some of the finest detail on the eyeball itself. Clearly a smoothly and honestly worn example, the surface displays consistent, even dusty golden hue throughout and very few marks on the obverse, while inevitable small circulation marks nick the reverse.

Current rarity of such Mormon gold stems from the fact that these were widely held in low esteem and vastly melted. They were struck on lightweight planchets with debased gold content, and therefore worth less than the stated face value, causing merchants to reject their use. Hence, over contemporary time, they were basically melted into new coinage by other private mints, as well as the San Francisco mint (starting in 1854).
