Lot Title:	Two different 1886 Bartholdi medals
Lot Number:	219
Description:	Tobacco Road Collection. The cataloger has actually seen and can verify that NGC will certify the 1886-dated Bartholdi medals, which were struck to commemorate the gift from France to the United States of the Statue of Liberty. Nearly all are holed, as-made, which is the case for the example here graded by the consignor as AU. This is a delightful and original medal showing small handling marks on Bartholdi's neck, and the variety has the horizon level with the midsection of the base of the statue. The second example, though, is by far the jewel of this pairing because it has never been holed for suspension and furthermore, the cataloger suggests a borderline Choice Mint State grade. Indeed, this is the finest example the cataloger has ever seen in-hand -- significantly nicer than a handful of MS-61 medals that NGC has certified. This variety has the horizon at Liberty's knees and appears to be the scarcer. Two medal lot.
