Lot Title: One Dr. Cooper's Battery and Nine Boyd's Batteries
Lot Number: 215
Description: Tobacco Road Collection. The Blood Is The Life exclaims one contemporary ad for Boyd's Battery. Quack medical devices have been no stranger to Americans for decades, and circa 1878, the so-called "Boyd's Battery" was advertised as a cure-all for numerous ailments, such as rheumatism, sick headache, liver and kidney complaint, neuralgia, gout, lumbago, malaria, dyspepsia, nervousness, constipation and all blood impurities. Subtle varieties exist and it appears the consignor was attempting to create a study set of nine pieces. Far more rare, and included here, is a superior example of Dr. Cooper's Battery, an imitation of Boyd's device except that these are not dated. One Boyd's Battery example was extracted from an NGC holder and comes with the original slab label.
