Lot Title: 1867 No Rays PCGS MS-65+ CACCAC
Lot Number: 781
Description: Daily Homer Collection. 6 graded MS-65+, 28 higher at PCGS. Triple-punched date. The mint believed that by removing the rays from the reverse, the "new" 5-cent pieces would strike up better than the prior major type, and this proved to be true in subsequent years. However, as is shown by a significant die crack through "IN" on the reverse, the hard metal alloy continued to offer challenges to production through the first few years of the shield nickel's existence. In addition, collectors enjoy the numerous varieties seen for 1867 in particular, with this coin boasting obvious signs of two previous punchings of the date.
