Lot Title: Roman Empire - 42 BC denarius- NGC Ch AU
Lot Number: 91
Description: Thrace Collection. Roman Imperatorial, Julius Caesar. Struck in 42 BC, two years after the assassination of Julius Caesar with the moneyer's name L. Mussidius Longus featured prominently on the reverse. Prior coinage in ancient Rome always depicted animals, agricultural symbols, or gods and goddesses, and it was not until 44 BC that a real and living person -- Julius Caesar -- appeared on minted coins. Obv: laureated head of Julius Caesar facing right, inside beaded border (not complete here - these are virtually always struck well off center). Rev: rudder, globe, cornucopia, caduceus, and apex. NGC references "smoothed", which seems to indicate light polishing and perhaps minor tooling on the reverse.
Estimate: $8,250-$9,000
