Lot Number: 589
Description: The Crimson Collection. Sheldon-3 (low R.3). Granted that the surface micro-granularity may disguise some of the attribution pickup points, no clash marks show in front of the portrait as would be the case for a late die-state. Therefore, this ought to be desirable die-state I (or II at the very latest if one believes there might be light clash marks diminished by the surface texture). By a noticeable margin, S-3 is the most common of the Chain Cent die marriages and will usually serve best for type purposes. Both sides exhibit attractive, boldly outlined details, full legends and even some finer delineation, as well as noticeably upraised rims, the primary challenge to grade and appearance being the darker hue and overall microporosity. Much on the plus side, the obverse displays no mentionable marks at all, nor rim nicks, while only a couple of hairline scrapes affect the reverse.

Prior to creation of the United States mint, a ragtag assortment of coins of varying design, metal content, denomination, language and nation of origin circulated throughout the continent, including copper coins from all over Europe, not to mention the various state "coppers" that found their way across state lines. Issuance of the standard-sized CENT was a major step forward in the standardization of American commerce, even if the weight of the coin would diminish rapidly over the next few years. The ideal of a standard cent, one hundred to a dollar, was the key point. As the earliest Federal copper coin that helped advance the modernization of coinage from its earliest days, the Chain Cent holds a unique place in the hearts of collectors, and many an otherwise casual early copper enthusiast would proudly place a humble example like this into a collection.
