Lot Title: 1875-CC PCGS XF-45
Lot Number: 331
Description: Sheffield Collection. Mintage: 7715. 19 graded XF-45, 24 higher at PCGS. 1875 saw zero eagles struck in San Francisco and just a hundred struck in Philadelphia (an all-time rarity, in fact), making the Carson City emission the high tide mint for the year. Yet so elusive is the 1875-CC in better grades, that between them, the two major grading services show a meager three mint-state incidents, and even AU examples are considered very rare. Thus, a significantly lustrous and somewhat well detailed example like this becomes pressured to stand in as the "best available" in numerous collections. Fortunately, although not perfect given the plentiful sliding abrasions and definite signs of circulation, both sides do show enough frisky luster to accommodate the XF-45 grade. A couple of sizable abrasions above the eagle's head probably play into grade determination.
