Lot Title: 1872-CC PCGS VF-35 CACCAC
Lot Number: 329
Description: Sheffield Collection. Mintage: 4600. 9 graded VF-35, 46 higher at PCGS. When the population report impresses at the very-fine level, then one knows the coin in question has to be a formidable rarity, which is an apt description for the 1872-CC gold eagle. A very low emission by any standard also saw considerable use in actual commerce, which helps explain why only a single piece has ever reached the mint-state level. This example retains surprisingly bold, frosty luster surrounding the devices and the reverse actually offers a hint of cartwheel effect. Indeed, the level of wear likely stands right on the cusp of VF/XF, although inevitably, the abraded surface quality favors the more conservative approach. None of the abrasions qualifies as major, with the majority seemingly relegated to the reverse.
