Lot Title: Finest known 1904 The Pike Souvenir elongated cent NGC MS-67 RB, plus two additional 1904 World's Fair elongated cents
Lot Number: 239
Description: North Louis County Collection. Donald Drew Collection. The 1904 World's Fair witnessed the first Olympics games hosted in the United States and was held from April 30 to December 1, 1904. Elongated cents were a very popular memento and are frequently found rolled out on so-dated Indian cents. Such is the case for this astonishing MS-67 RB example (H-13-230), the finest graded by NGC. Obviously rolled and then put away into careful storage, the surfaces exhibit substantial mint orange -- is that the proper way to describe color after a cent has been elongated? -- and the Indian design itself remains plainly discernible on the reverse, itself still showing a lot of orange color.

"The Pike" was a huge amusement park erected on the fairgrounds housing more than fifty concessions, as well as machinery used to roll out elongated cents. References state that the staged area was paved in brick, ninety feet wide and a mile long, illuminated at night by modern (for the time) arc lights, and filled with more expensive and elaborate exhibits than any fair prior. The specially designated "Pike Day" fell on June 4, 1904 and the event was intended to be permanent, but Washington University cancelled plans to expand, or even retain The Pike.

Accompanying is H-13-220 (MS-64 BN), titled "ON THE PIKE", this example showing charming, glossy bluish hue on the elongate side, and still-legible details on the host side. Finally, H-13-290 (MS-63 BN) features mahogany-bronze elongate against the reverse of an Indian cent, and the added details are pronounced enough as to eradicate the date of the host cent. Three coin (elongate?) lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
