Lot Title: Error - 1921-S Buffalo nickel NGC MS-64 reverse lamination
Lot Number: 196
Description: Back when ANACS dominated the certification market -- in other words, in the distant numismatic beforetimes -- such a coin probably would have earned a straight grade and then a "lamination" disclaimer. Today, apparently, it is necessary to reference such an alloy irregularity as "mint error", which NGC mistakenly relegates only to the reverse. Actually, an additional lamination appears at far left of the obverse as well, but the 1921-S is infamous for being struck on imperfectly prepared planchets. Unlike the usual example, both sides feature much better strikes than a typical 1921-S, with the bison in particular showing a bold, full horn and substantial detailing within his hide. Luminous flowline luster can't help but result from aged dies, and the surface generally dodges most signs of contact.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
