Lot Title: 1884-S NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 590
Description: The Crack Of Dawn Collection. 114 graded MS-61, 180 higher at NGC. The first five years of Morgan dollar production saw outstanding examples pouring out of San Francisco, but inexplicably in 1883, quality began to diminish, and the 1884-S followed that trend, as it represents by far one of the most extreme grade-rarities within the series. All UNC populations have inflated by resubmissions to the grading services and a truly mint-state survivor like the present lustrous example instantly becomes a source of pride within any collection. Substantial patina overlays the entire surface and suggests unusually original quality for a date that has often been targeted for "improvement". Perhaps more important, neither side exhibits any noticeable contact, which is remarkable for just MS-61, but it must be noted that the center of either side has blurry details due to a mediocre strike.
