Lot Title: 1926-S PCGS MS-65
Lot Number: 491
Description: 39 graded MS-65, 4 higher at PCGS. With a prodigious output of 2-million struck, the 1926-S should not be such an elusive entry into the double-eagle series. But as was the fate for the preceding 1925-S, the date was heavily melted, and of the limited number that escaped that fate, a few still entered into secondary storage or circulation and show evidence of wear or handling today. Furthermore, 1926-S was never really intended for widespread public distribution, and instead was typically employed to back government obligations, or used for international payments, literally in bags of coins sent to foreign nations to settle debts. Interestingly enough, as recently as the 1950s, collectors considered the 1926-S to be extremely rare and basically unattainable, but fortunately, a few have since emerged from the dispersal of European hoards that also brought to light new examples of other previously unobtainable issues.

Most certified 1926-S Saints fall within the MS-62 to MS-64 grade range, with precise determination often decided by the aggregate effect of visible abrasions. In this case, there are no large marks, although smaller contact points line pepper Liberty's knees and shins. On the reverse, the only mentionable contact takes form as a line of ticks crossing a few of the Sun's rays toward the left, joined by inevitable random marks on Sun's face itself. All of this falls moot in the presence of attractive luster and color, however. Cataloger's note: the population has declined by one in MS-65, but increased by one in higher grade, indicating an example that has at least "plussed" recently.
