Lot Title: 1924-S PCGS MS-64
Lot Number: 487
Description: Jamelle Collection. 117 graded MS-64, 23 higher at PCGS. NGC's population report eerily echoes what PCGS has seen for this notable rarity within the Saint Gaudens double-eagle series. That the 1924-S exists at all in collectable quantities is the happy result of coins that were stockpiled within European bank hoards. Some have returned to the United States in the past century to bolster the population to a level that keeps it scarce, yet attainable unlike the extremely rare dates.

The cataloger would argue that like some other branch-mint issues, the 1924-S tends to offer an attractive presentation in terms of details, and this example displays evidence of an early set of dies, given a very good strike and little evidence of die polish. Later examples lost some finer details as the dies were progressively refinished for subsequent strikings. Terrific luster spins around the motifs with wide-band vigor. The obverse sees really just a limited quantity of light, scattered abrasions but a curious abraded area, shaped like the St. Louis arch, shows at right of center in the eagle's feathers. Delicate ruby-gold iridescence plays over portions of the overall medium-tinted surface.
