Lot Title: 1789 Eagle and Sun Washington Inaugural Button
Lot Number: 873
Description: The K.C. Collection. Cobb-4, WHB.2A, GWI 1-A (original), DeWitt GS1789.4. An insert from the Stack's Bowers Galleries ANA Auction, Philadelphia, 8/4-10, 2012 helps lead to the attribution from which we borrow gladly. An heraldic eagle dominates the design, his wings outstretched and splayed into the sun in order to represent the strength and readiness to move forward into the "New Era" as a united nation. The eagle's left talon clutches a bundle of three arrows, representing the three branches of U.S. government, and an olive branch in the right talon provides the traditional representation of peace and tranquility. Thirteen alternating, vertical stripes in the shield obviously make reference to the original colonies.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
